The courses: which ones are worth it

The names you should know: Montgomerie Maxx Royal, designed by Colin Montgomerie, with wide fairways and lots of water, venue of the Turkish Airlines Open. Carya Golf Club, a British-style heathland course with floodlighting on nine holes for evening rounds. Cornelia Golf Club by Nick Faldo with 27 holes. National Golf Club, the oldest course in Belek, with mature trees. Then the courses at Gloria (three courses, including Gloria Old and New), Sueno (Dunes and Pines), Antalya Golf Club (PGA Sultan and Pasha), Kaya Palazzo, Lykia Links on the coast near Denizyaka with a true links character, and Titanic Golf Club. Quality is consistently high, the fairways are well kept and the greens fast. For a first visit, Carya, Montgomerie and Cornelia are the safe choices; Lykia Links for anyone who wants wind and dunes; Gloria and Sueno are a bit cheaper and busier.

Green fees and what they include

Green fees in Belek in high season (October, November, March, April) are CHF 120 to 200 (about EUR 128 to 215) per 18-hole round including buggy on the top courses, and CHF 80 to 130 on the cheaper ones. In December and January prices drop by 20 to 30 percent, in summer by half. Hotel guests of the respective resort pay less than external players; some hotels give guests priority on tee times. A buggy is mandatory or strongly recommended on most courses because the distances are long, and costs CHF 30 to 40 if not included. Rental clubs are CHF 40 to 60 per round, recent Callaway or TaylorMade quality. The driving range is usually included in the green fee. Tipping caddies and starters is customary, CHF 5 to 10. Packages with four or five rounds booked online in advance are 15 to 25 percent cheaper than single rounds.

Hotels and packages

Almost every course in Belek belongs to one or more hotels. The big resorts (Maxx Royal, Regnum Carya, Cornelia Diamond, Gloria Serenity, Sueno Deluxe, Kaya Palazzo, Titanic Deluxe) are five-star properties with all-inclusive, spa, several restaurants and their own beach. Prices for a double room with all-inclusive in the golf season are CHF 200 to 500 (about EUR 215 to 535) per night, with a golf package from CHF 1200 per person for a week with four to five rounds. Cheaper are four-star hotels in Belek or Kadriye with golf packages through tour operators, from CHF 900 per week. Golf tour operators across Europe have Belek on their books, and their prices are often better than booking direct because the hotels give them allocations. For non-golfing companions there is beach, spa and excursions to Antalya, Aspendos and Side. Tip: pick a hotel whose course you want to play; transfers to other courses cost time.

Best months and weather

October and November are the best time: 22 to 28 degrees, little rain, courses in top condition after the summer. March and April likewise, with a bit more rain and greener courses. December to February golf is possible at 12 to 18 degrees but with rainy days; prices are then at their lowest and the courses empty. May is warm and dry, already slightly too hot in the afternoon. June to September is high summer at 35 degrees and more, golf only with a 7 am tee time or in the evening under floodlights; the courses then offer extremely cheap fees. The wind comes off the sea in the afternoon, noticeable on the coastal courses such as Lykia Links. The pine courses inland are more sheltered. Rain gear in your bag makes sense from November to March, sun protection all year round. Morning tee times are in demand in high season; book them with the hotel.

Getting there, tournaments and typical mistakes

Direct flights from most major European airports to Antalya run all year round, less frequently in winter. From the airport it is 30 to 40 minutes to Belek; the hotels organise transfers, and taxis cost CHF 40 to 60 (about EUR 43 to 64). Golf luggage on the plane costs CHF 50 to 100 per leg, depending on the fare. There are guest tournaments all the time, many hotels hold weekly competitions, and the Turkish Airlines Open of the DP World Tour was held several times in November in Belek. Typical mistakes: booking in August because it is cheap and then underestimating the heat. Playing just one round per course and transferring every day instead of getting to know two courses well. Ignoring the handicap requirements; some top courses require a handicap of 28 or better. And switching from your home hotel over a 50 franc difference when the house course is the best one.

Frequently asked questions

What does a golf week in Belek cost?

With flight, five-star all-inclusive hotel and five rounds, CHF 1500 to 2500 (about EUR 1600 to 2700) per person in high season. Four-star versions from CHF 900 to 1200. Individual green fees CHF 80 to 200 depending on course and season.

When is the best time for golf in Belek?

October, November, March and April: 20 to 28 degrees, dry, courses in top condition. Winter is cheap and playable with a risk of rain. Summer only early in the morning or under floodlights.

Which course should I play first?

Carya for condition and design, Montgomerie for championship character, Cornelia for variety with 27 holes. Lykia Links for links golf by the sea. Gloria and Sueno as cheaper alternatives.

Do I need a handicap?

Most courses require a handicap certificate, and some top courses a handicap of 28 or better for men and 36 for women. A course-ready certificate is often enough on the resort courses; ask when booking.

Is Belek worth it for non-golfers?

To a degree. The resorts are comfortable with beach and spa, but Belek itself is a hotel town without charm. For excursions, Antalya, Aspendos, Side and Perge are close. If you want culture, combine it with a few days in the old town of Antalya.
